RESETTLING AND REBUILDING THE KYIV JEWISH COMMUNITY IN ISRAEL

Ukrainian Refugee Relocation Program

Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, thousands of Jewish refugees have escaped to Israel. Among them is a community of more than 200 former Kyiv residents, now relocated to Tiberias.

Goal of this project:                                              Integrate the Jewish refugees from Kyiv and help them become stable, financially independent members of Israel’s society.

Needs of the refugees:

  • Shelter (rental subsidies)
  • Food
  • Clothing
  • Education
  • Transportation
  • Immersive Hebrew language classes
  • Job training

Thanks to your generous donations, $360,000 was raised for the immediate needs of the refugees.  Now BAI Kyiv/Tiberias needs your help rebuilding the community’s infrastructure so that the new immigrants will have the necessary continuous support.

Bringing back the light

For close to 50 years, the Jews of the Ukraine suffered enormously behind the Iron Curtain.
In addition to the widespread poverty and corruption of the communist regime, they were robbed of their heritage and traditions.

Even after the fall of the Soviet Union, countless Ukrainian Jews knew virtually nothing of their religion or of G-d.

Bais Aharon V’Yisrael (BAI) has played a large role in making this change.

Due to the 2022 war between Russia and the Ukraine, the community was evacuated  to Tiberias, Israel.  Most have found housing but many still need job training, language classes, financial and emotional support and much more.  The dedicated staff of Bais Aharon V’Yisrael is working tirelessly to accomplish this goal, but they need your assistance.

Who is Bais Aharon V’Yisrael?

A project of the Karliner Rebbe, Bais Aharon V’Yisrael is more than a fund; it is a lifeline for Jews from Ukraine.

Until February of 2022, Bais Aharon V’Yisrael ran a host of essential programs in Kyiv to support the Jewish community and foster its growth.  With your help, BAI is continuing to do the same for the Ukrainian Jewish refugees in Tiberias, Israel.  It is very important for the community to stay together for moral support and to facilitate a return to normal life; the BAI staff are doing everything possible to make this happen.

Kehillah: Community Support

For more than seven years, the Rabbi Zaltzman, leader of the Kehillah, and his team supported the community from Kyiv and hundreds of Jews from surrounding areas in Ukraine.  In Tiberias, Israel, Rabbi Zaltzman and the BAI team continue to provide services and support, with warmth and love.

Programming includes:

  • Jewish education and holiday programming
  • Weekly inspiration and delicious communal Shabbat meals, open to all
  • Medical assistance and funds for medications
  • Soup kitchen and food assistance
  • Financial assistance
  • Assistance with life cycle events: weddings, births, funerals
  • Activities for children and families

Schools & Institutions

In addition to boys and girls elementary schools, Bais Aharon V’Yisrael ran separate dormitories for orphaned boys and girls or those who could not live at home due to dysfunctional family situations. In the dormitories, the children received:

  • A 24/7 safe, nurturing home
  • Warm, nourishing meals
  • Clean clothing
  • Toys and activities
  • Meaningful holiday celebrations
  • Support and unconditional loving care

After moving the community to Tiberias, the girls were placed in local schools, where they are attending intense Hebrew language classes and still need a great deal of encouragement and support to acclimate.  The community school from Kyiv was continued for the boys from the community.  At some point, the boys will also be integrated into local schools. Both the boys and girls still require assistance in learning the language and acclimating to their new culture, as well as recovering from the trauma of leaving Ukraine under war conditions.

Yeshiva

In Kyiv, a Yeshiva was established for young men from various places in Ukraine to embrace their spiritual heritage by learning Torah and Jewish law.  The Yeshiva was reopened in Tiberias.

Yeshiva programming in Tiberias, Israel needs your support:

  • Rabbis and teachers
  • Beginner and advanced skill development
  • Three daily nourishing meals

Women’s Institute

A dedicated space for women to come together, learn, and grow.

The Women’s Institute has resumed in Tiberias, Israel and needs your support

  • Inspirational religious classes
  • Weekly get-togethers fostering connection and support
  • Vocational training and job placement

They need your help

As the relief that accompanied escaping from war-torn Ukraine fades and reality sets in, Jews from Kyiv seek to rebuild their lives in Israel where many are unable to communicate or work in their chosen professions.

Bais Aharon V’Yisrael is working tirelessly to absorb their fear and frustration and assist them with a range of needs and integration into society in Israel.

Bais Aharon V’Yisrael evacuated them from the Ukraine and is leading the resettlement efforts.
